I have a very important question I want to ask you. When you hear the term 'Moderate Muslim', what image comes to your mind?

Is it of a man with a beard and trousers above his ankles, a woman with a niqab and jilbaab? Or instead a clean shaved man or a woman in tight clothes and some kind of partial head covering?

The reality is that, unfortunately, most think of a not so practicing, liberal Muslim.

The truth is Allah already talked about the moderate Muslims in the Quran. But what did He mean when He said, 'we have made you into a nation which is moderate'?

The question we need to ask is, when this ayah about this ummah being a moderate nation was revealed, describing and affirming that they are moderate Muslims, which group of people did it come down on? Who was it talking about? The companions of the Prophet ﷺ! Because they were the only ummah that existed at that time. They are the ideal examples of what a moderate Muslim is and should be.

So what did they look like? The female companions wore niqaab. The male companions had beards and trousers above the ankles. They prayed their 5 daily prayers in the masjid. They used to seek knowledge. THESE were moderate Muslims!

So then, if this is what moderation looks like, what's extremism??

We know that the Prophet ﷺ said, 'May the extremists be destroyed' 3 times, and Allah said, 'O people of the Book, do not become extreme in your religion'. So who were these extremists??

The people of the book are the Jews and the Christians. Based on this ayah, both groups fell into extremism. But they fell into it in different directions. So, from this, we learn that extremism is of two types: Those who go overboard in their religion, and those who come extremely short with regards to it.

The Jews went extremely overboard and the Christians fell extremely short.

In our ummah, those who went extremely overboard are those groups such as ISIS; they came with things that Islam did not ask of them. And those who fell short are those who are too relaxed and liberal!

Brothers and sisters, extremism is a very important topic in our religion and the Prophet ﷺ prohibited it in many ways. The misguided 72 sects in Islam all fell into extremism in one way or another.

So the question is, which sect is the correct, moderate, saved sect? How do I achieve moderation in my religion? How do I protect myself from falling into extremism??

Insha'Allah ta'ala this is what we will be going through in this course
